There have been some incredible automotive Lego sets over the years, from the Volkswagen camper van to the Caterham Seven to the Mercedes-Benz Unimog. The next great Lego car could be just over the horizon, but you have to convince Lego to sell it first. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon you see here was built by a fan, and it needs support from more than 10,000 people before Lego will put it into production.
The project was submitted to the Lego Ideas website, a portal that allows fans to post their creations for a chance to eventually be mass-produced by the Danish toy company. Users pledge their support for a project, and if enough people get behind it in the allotted amount of time Lego green-lights it for production. Obviously, for something like this FCA would also have to get involved at some point for licensing purposes. But why wouldn’t they want this uncanny mini Jeep to hit toy store shelves?
The Lego Wrangler’s creator is Chiho Kim, who says the hardest part was joining the curved hood with the fenders. Though he came up with a solution, he says a better way would need to be found if it were to be approved for mass production. We agree that the hood (and the engine bay) could use some work, but otherwise the build is pretty spot-on. Kim says the Jeep is the same scale as the VW camper van, Beetle, and Mini Cooper, riding on 62mm tires. The proposed kit also includes a miniature fire extinguisher, cargo net, camera, and safety cones.
