BMW is first to roll out the automated feature.

The new BMW 7 Series will eventually get a feature to help ease the struggle of parking in tight and cramped spots. According to AUTOMOBILE, BMW’s flagship sedan will eventually offer Park Assistant Plus, an option that allows owners to maneuver their 7 Series in and out of parking spots by using the key fob.

The feature is available in other countries, but BMW initially decided not to offer it in the U.S. due to federal law FMVSS 114. The law states that the brake must be “depressed” in order to operate and shift the transmission out of park.

BMW filed for an exemption with the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, which prompted the agency to investigate the rule further. Earlier this month, NHTSA informed BMW that the 7 Series does in fact comply with the rule since the vehicle (specifically the electronic stability control system) applies the brake prior to the transmission shifting out of park.

The extensive safety precautions needed to operate Park Assistant Plus also contributed to the agency’s approval of the feature. To operate Park Assistant Plus, the driver must shift the transmission to park and turn the vehicle off. After exiting the vehicle, the driver then uses the key fob to turn the feature on and must press and hold a safety button. Only then will the driver be allowed to use the key fob’s touchscreen to maneuver the 7 Series in or out of the parking spot.

AUTOMOBILE reports BMW doesn’t yet have a date for when the feature will be added to the 7 Series. Which BMW claims is the world’s first vehicle featuring remote control parking.
