Volkswagen Arteon
Volkswagen released a sketch of a four-door fastback it will introduce at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The Volkswagen Arteon is expected to replace the aging CC coupe.
“The totally new developed model is positioned above the Passat and emphasizes emotionality in the upper mid-class,” VW said in a release. The model will debut a new design language for the VW brand.
If the sketch looks anything like the model we’ll see in Geneva, the Arteon gets a long and lean body that offers plenty of differentiation from the Passat. It features a narrow grille that extends into the headlights along with striking character lines on the body and hood. Also look for frameless windows, a top-hinged wide opening tailgate, and oversized wheels. Overall, the design reminds us a bit of the Sport Coupe Concept GTE that VW brought out last year.
How did VW come up with the curious name? “Art” is said to represent the car’s emotional design, while “eon” is VW’s way of identifying premium models in its lineup. The name coincides with Phideon, the name for VW’s top model in China.
The Arteon is set to replace the CC, a four-door Passat look-a-like that debuted for the U.S. during the 2009 model year. Its last major refresh came in 2012. It’s unclear what VW’s timeline is for the U.S., but the new Arteon will launch globally in the summer of 2017.
