SUVs (popularly called Jeeps) are well known to high level of fuel consumption. While an average sedan (car) may consume about 8L of petrol for every 100Km, an average SUV may consume as much as 14L of petrol for every 100Km. There are however some SUVs that won’t bite hard on the pocket in terms of fuel consumption. Here is a list of some fuel efficient SUVs (with some having better fuel economy than some saloon cars!):
Toyota RAV4 is a sport utility vehicle (SUV) produced by Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It was the first compact crossover SUV. The vehicle was designed for
consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the maneuverability and fuel economy of a compact car. One important feature of the Toyota rav4 is it’s distinct fuel economy among SUV’S. The average miles per gallon or litre per kilometer of Toyota rav4 is 24 mpg (~9.8L/100km).
Honda CR-V is a compact crossover, manufactured since 1995 by Honda. It was loosely derived from the Honda Civic. The CR-V stands for Civic Recreational Vehicle. The average mile per gallon or litre per kilometer of Honda CR-V is 25 mpg (~9.4L/100km).
Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover SUV produced by Mazda starting in 2012 for the 2013 model year lineup. It is Mazda’s first car featuring the new KODO – Soul of Motion Design language first shown in the Shinari concept vehicle in May 2011. It shares a platform with Mazda3 and Mazda6. It is also the first vehicle featuring the company’s full Skyactiv Technology suite, featuring a rigid, lightweight platform, combined with a new series of efficient engines and trans

Ford Escape is a compact crossover vehicle sold by Ford since 2000 over three generations. Ford released the original model in 2000 for the 2001 model year—a model jointly developed and released with Mazda of Japan—who took a lead in the engineering of the two models and sold their version as the Mazda Tribute. Although the Escape and Tribute share the same underpinnings constructed from the Ford CD2 platform (based on Mazda GF underpinnings), the only panels common to the two vehicles are the roof and floor pressings. Power trains were supplied by Mazda with respect to the base inline-four engine, with Ford providing the optional V6. Hyundai Tucson is a Compact SUV produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 2004. In the marque’s lineup, the Tucson fits below the Santa Fe and Veracruz. Mitsubishi Outlander is a mid-size crossover manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek when it was introduced in Japan in 2001, and was based on the Mitsubishi ASX concept vehicle exhibited at the 2001 North American International Auto Show. It was sold at Mitsubishi Japan dealership chain called Car Plaza. The ASX (Active Sports Crossover) represented Mitsubishi’s approach to the industry wide SUV trend for retaining the all-season and off-road abilities offered by a high ground clearance and four-wheel drive, while still offering car-like levels of emissions, economy and size. Jeep Compass (MK49) is a compact crossover SUV introduced for the 2007 model year by Jeep. Jeep Patriot(MK) is a compact crossover SUV introduced in early 2007 by Jeep. It debuted publicly in April 2006 at the New York Auto Show along with the same MK platform Compass. The average mile per gallon or litre per kilometer of the jeep patriot is 26 mpg (~9L/100km).
GMC Terrain is a mid-size crossover utility vehicle (CUV) produced by GMC. According to General Motors (GM), it replaced the Pontiac Torrent which was sold in the same dealerships prior to GM dropping the Pontiac brand. Like the Torrent, the Terrain is based on the Theta platform. The Terrain slots below the Acadia as GMC’s smallest SUV. Chevrolet Equinox is a mid-size crossover SUV 
from Chevrolet based on General Motors’s Theta unibody platform, manufactured at CAMI Automotive (formerly a GM/Suzuki joint venture, now wholly owned by GM) plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada, and introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year. The average mile per gallon or litre per kilometer of the Chevrolet equinox is 20 mpg (~11.75L/100km).
Nissan Juke is a Mini Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) produced by the Japanese automotive manufacturer Nissan since 2010. The production version made its debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March, and was introduced to North America at the 2010 New York International Auto Show.
